I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from University of Alabama at Birmingham, where 14 of my college credits focused on early childhood development. Even then, I had a passion for learning about the development of a child and the desire to work with children. I have six years of experience as being a tutor and mentor for elementary school students for Selma City Schools under the Selma AmeriCorps Program. My main concertation was Kindergarten and 1st grade students where I provided them assistance in their reading, writing, math, and social skills while in the classroom. I was able the opportunity to engaged with the parents of the students I worked with. So I do have some experience working with families and understand certain situations my students went through in their home life. During my time at AmeriCorps I have learned how to use my communication and listening skills in order to be a better mentor to provide the emotional guidance for the children who are in need.
In addition to working at AmeriCorps, I was the Youth Director at my church for two years, where I worked with ages 1 to 18.Where I also had the opportunity to engaged with the parents and the families as well. I help organized any events for the youth can patriciate in the church and community along with helping with the education process inside the church. I was also a Sunday school and Vacation Bible School teacher where I worked with the Beginner’s (ages 1-5) and Primary (Ages (6-8) classes. That is where I really discovered my passion with working with young children in order to provide them with the tools they need to succeed. I also obtained a Substitute Teacher license with the Alabama Department of Education as well.
